Hackney Conservative Leader Accused of Ethnic Slur

Bullet Point 2008-12-22 19:00:00

Harringey Lib Dem councillor Neil Williams has accused Hackney Tory leader Matthew Coggins of issuing an election leaflet with, “unpleasant ethnic undertones” about the Lib Dem candidate for the Haringey Seven sisters Ward by-election, David Schmitz.

The leaflet describes Schmitz as “Hailing from the Bronx” and states that he “doesn't live here”. Schmitz is the son of refugees who came to England to escape Nazi persecution. Although he was born in the U.S.A. He has British Citizenship and has lived in the UK since his twenties. He lives and works in Tottenham.

In his blog, Coucillor Williams says that having an overseas connection should not be considered as a reason against voting for any person and challenges Coggins whether he would find it acceptable to condemn a candidate because he “hails” from Scotland or Bangladesh.
