Lib Dem surge puts Hackney's Labour MPs and Mayor at risk
As a result of Nick Clegg winning the leader's debate, and the subsequent surge in support for the Liberal Democrats in the national opinion polls, local Liberal Democrats in Hackney are increasingly optimistic that they can win locally in Hackney as well.
Keith Angus, the Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for Hackney North, said:
"We thought we were doing well before the leader's debate but now I get people walking up to me in the street asking me what they can do to help in my campaign. We have had a flood of enquiries. Its amazing! I have never seen anything like it".
His colleague in Hackney South, Dave Raval added:
"The key thing is that at the last general election we both came a clear second. Previous Labour supporters are not worried about letting in the Tories because they know it won't happen here in Hackney. The choice is now between change with the Lib Dems or keep things as they are with Labour. And when we ask them if they want things to stay as they are, not surprisingly they always say no!"
In the mayoral elections the Lib Dem candidate Adrian Gee-Turner has an extra advantage. Many Labour and Tory voters have told Adrian they will give him their first preference and others have said they will at least definitely give him their second vote.
Adrian said,
"My priority is to get the first preferences. I find that most people do not know who the mayor even is, despite all the taxpayer's money spent on Hackney Today giving him his own platform at our expense. And even those who do know who he is cannot tell me what he has done for the area. People in Hackney want to see change".
