Nick Clegg calls on ethnic minority communities to register to vote

Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg has today echoed calls by Operation Black Vote for the black, Asian and minority ethnic communities to ensure that they have registered to vote in time for this year’s general election.
The deadline to register to vote in the 6 May election is tomorrow: Tuesday 20 April.
Research from the Electoral Commission shows that the UKs BAME community are among those least likely to be on the electoral register, with an estimated 17% not registered. If you are not registered to vote, you cannot vote at local and national elections.
Nick Clegg: “If it makes you angry that almost half of all young black people will be unable to get a job, that the already huge pay gap widens massively for BAME women and that a child’s chances in life are still determined by their parents bank balance, it is crucial that you get out there and make your voice heard.
“This Tuesday will be the last chance to register to vote, so don’t settle for low politics and broken promises. Demand better. Demand change. Register to vote and make your voice heard.”
Simon Woolley, Director of OBV said: “Nick Clegg could easily take his eyes off the BME vote, given his recent success, but he hasn’t. On the contrary his appeal is timely as it is relevant. This will be an historic election for a number of reasons not least the power of the Black vote. Register today.”
The 6 May general election is expected to be the most fiercely fought general election in recent times and every vote can make a difference.
