CLISSOLD CENTRE CASH SHOCK AFTER ELECTION? - Won't say, says Pipe
Hackney Lib Dems have accused Labour mayor Jules Pipe of hiding the final cost of repairing Clissold Leisure Centre until after the May council elections.
Clissold Ward candidate and former Lib-Dem councillor, Sylvia Anderson, said the mayor last week received the architect’s estimate for fixing the £45 million white elephant. But, she claims, he has now refused to reveal the figure.
Clissold Leisure Centre has been empty for 3 years because of serious roof design and construction faults.
Mrs Anderson said that a fellow member of the Clissold Leisure Centre Users Group confronted Mr Pipe at the Labour-organised Stoke Newington Forum and demanded to know the architect’s estimate.
“After a great deal of waffling the Mayor admitted the amount paid by the original developers in compensation was far short of the final repair bill,” she said.
“He dismissed us by saying he was not ‘at liberty’ to tell the borough how much we’d end up paying.
“And just to make matters worse, having already been denied the right to add the Leisure Centre to the agenda” she added, “I was denied the right to ask more questions about this disastrous project. So much for the mayor’s idea of democracy!”
