Hackney Lib Dems join national Green Tax Switch campaign
Under Labour, our Government is going backwards on climate change. The Government’s own statistics reveal that carbon dioxide emissions in the UK have increased by 0.5 % between 2004 and 2005, with an overall increase in carbon dioxide emissions of 2.9% since Labour came to power in 1997.In their Climate Change Review of March 2006, which was nine months later than originally intended, the Labour Government abandoned their target of a 20% reduction (based on 1990 levels) of carbon dioxide levels, despite the fact that this was a clear manifesto commitment in 1997, 2001 and 2005. Since the Kyoto protocol came into force on 23rd March 2005, the Government’s record has also seen the Department of Trade and Industry attempting to weaken the targets for UK businesses within the Emissions Trading Scheme by taking legal action against the European Commission into agreeing to higher emission limits and Labour appear to have given up on tackling climate change emissions from aviation – the fastest growing source of emissions.
Lib-Dem leader on Hackney Council, Cllr Ian Sharer, said “Labour’s record on the Environment is abysmal, across the board. From failing to provide plastic recycling facilities here in Hackney, to the lack of action on greenhouse gases, Labour are about as green as the new generation of nuclear power stations with which they wish to bespoil the country.”
Liberal Democrats want to give the average family a £1,000 income tax cut to save the planet. By switching to green taxes instead, everyone can help switch off climate chaos. Liberal Democrats will radically change the way Britain pays tax. Taxing good things- like income - less, and switching to taxing bad things - like pollution - instead. Then, the more you choose to switch to greener living, the more of your Lib-Dem income tax cut you will keep. It’s your choice!
While other politicians just talk about the environment, Lib-Dem leader, Menzies Campbell, has won praise for his green tax switch plan to actually do something to tackle growing climate chaos. “We want fair tax, not more tax” says Sir Menzies Campbell MP, “but we do want to use tax to reward people who improve the way they live and do their bit to save our environment.”
