Lib Dems give qualified support to Travellers' Relocation

Bullet Point 2007-07-23 20:13:54

Local Liberal Democrats gave qualified support this week to plans that will see eight families from the travelling community relocated from Waterden Road to the site of the Millfields Cleaning Depot provided that concerns regarding parking were addressed. The families have to move from their site in Hackney Wick to Leabridge because of the Olympic developments in the area.

Council group leader, Councillor Ian Sharer told the Hackney Gazette that plans to allocate each family three parking spaces were "an incredible waste of space".

Ian commented further "This site is not being used to its full advantage and nobody needs three car parking spaces. Why not use the space to build facilities that can be used by all members of the local community such as an additional play area, that will help to bring the communities together? It's essential that we work with the travelling community here in Hackney, not against them."

Concerns were also raised that racist comments had been made in submissions to the council planning meeting. Cllr. Sharer concluded "It's disappointing that in an area as diverse as Hackney local people fall prey to such negative stereotypes."
