Call for Turkish speaking communities to register to vote
On May 1 elections will take place for the Mayor of London and the Greater London Assembly.
Cllr Meral Ece, who the Liberal Democrat candidate for North East London (Hackney, Islington & Waltham Forest) today called on all Turkish speaking residents in London who are entitled to a vote, to make sure they are registered to vote.
They have until the 16 April to register.
On May 1 elections, every vote will count. Any party which polls 5% or more of the vote across London, will win a seat on the London Assembly.
At the last GLA elections 4 years ago, the BNP polled 4.75% of the vote across London - just 5,000 votes away from winning a seat.
If they succeed in getting 5%, they can win a seat on the Assembly.
Meral has joined the cross party & trade union campaign, to make sure all communities use their right to vote to make sure that the far right British National Party (BNP) do not win any seats on May 1st.
Meral Ece says: "the BNP is a racist party, they are holocaust deniers and Nazi sympathisers. They do not let any black or ethnic minorities join their party. They would use any position on the London Assembly to spread hatred and promote division across multi-cultural London. A higher turnout will help keep the BNP out of London
"We must all ensure that we are registered to vote, and go out and use our vote on 1 May"
