LIBERAL DEMOCRATS WIN BATTLE FOR SAFER ROADS

Bullet Point 2008-04-22 21:43:42

Hackney's roads will become safer and cleaner, thanks to a proposal in the Liberal Democrat budget which has been adopted by the Borough Council.

At last week's Council meeting it was agreed that the speed limit on local residential roads will be reduced to 20 mph – to make them safer for pedestrians and to cut the amount of pollution from traffic.

Liberal Democrat Cllr Dawood Akhoon told the meeting of his personal experience of a family member who died in a traffic accident in Hackney. He believes that drivers have to act with far more care in built-up areas.

“I'm a driver myself,” he says. “But I recognise the responsibility I am taking on when I get behind the wheel of a car. They can be dangerous weapons, and there is no excuse for anyone to drive carelessly through residential areas.”

Liberal Democrat leader, Cllr Ian Sharer, says “This new policy will have two big benefits – it's good for our children and it's good for the environment. It will make our roads safer for pedestrians and it will reduce tha mount of pollution from traffic.”

The policy was one of the major items in the Lib Dem's budget, presented to the Council last month, and was proposed at last week's meeting in conjunction with Green Cllr Misha Borris.
