Lib-Dems fight Labour plans to build on estates

Bullet Point 2008-11-10 20:26:24

Hackney Lib-Dem leader, Cllr Ian Sharer, led a deputation of local residents to the  recent full council meeting, to try and stop the Labour council’s ridiculous Estates Plus scheme. Labour Mayor Jules  Pipe wants to allow private landlords to build on green space on our estates — and subsidise them with £6,000,000 of our money.

The deputation tackled the plans to “in ll” the estates with new buildings would lead to a radical decrease in the amount of green space available to residents, would lead to higher crime and was being brought forward by the council despite huge opposition from residents.

Cllr Sharer commented “The Labour council has completely lost touch with reality with these proposals. Although the proposals only add a relatively small number of new homes, they will result in the loss of a large proportion of the green space on the estate. Residents were poorly consulted and the proposals keep changing. If Frampton Park is the flagship
for the council’s scheme, I can only wonder as to how bad the proposals they are saving up for our other estates will be.”

Local campaigner Reuben Thompson commented “The Labour mayor has taken these proposals forward to cabinet at four days’ notice and with almost zero consultation.

“To add insult to injury, they’ve now announced that they want to sell off £9m worth of land for just £3m. That means that every hard-up household in the borough will be subsidising
this plan to help the council’s favourite private landlords to the tune of nearly a tenner.

“We need to fight these proposals all over Hackney”

Cllr. Sharer concluded “We have been very pleased to help local residents to bring their voice forward, and to work with MESH, LCAP and the TRAs. It is only a shame that the council could not have listened to residents in the first place by holding the consultation at a reasonable time, when  working people could attend, and then have dropped this scheme which nobody wants.”
