Hackney Lib-Dems announce Parliamentary Team

Bullet Point 2008-11-10 23:00:08

Hackney Liberal Democrats have named the two people who are their prospective parliamentary candidates for the next General Election.

At a meeting in the Town Hall on Thursday, they chose Keith Angus, a Bank Project Manager, to stand in Hackney North and Stoke Newington and Dave Raval, who manages a team helping people develop low carbon technologies, to take on Hackney South and Shoreditch.

The Liberal Democrats came second in both seats at the 2005 General Election.  They cut Labour's majority by a third in Hackney South and almost halved it in Hackney North.

Speaking after his selection, Dave Raval said: “We are facing major problems like the rising cost of living, climate change, lack of affordable housing, discrimination against minority groups – not to mention an increasing 'nanny' and 'surveillance' state, the strangling of community groups and local high streets.

“We want to take politics out of the political classes and represent ordinary people who feel they have been left behind.”

Keith Angus commented: “Labour have failed people around here – people who are struggling because of the financial crisis.  The time is right to have an MP who will stand up for everyone, fight for them and make a difference.

“The Lib Dems achieved a huge increase in votes at the last election.  We're in firm second place, while the Conservatives and Greens are third and fourth.  The Lib Dems are the only party who can beat Labour around here.”
