"Help Hackney!" says Lib Dem

Bullet Point 2008-11-23 14:16:29

On the day that unemployment figures hit their worst level in eleven years and the Bank of England admitted that the country is already going into a serious recession, Hackney Liberal Democrat Parliamentary spokesman Keith Angus demanded help for local people.

“This is one of the most vulnerable communities in the country,” said Mr. Angus, prospective parliamentary candidate for Hackney North . “All the figures for economic deprivation rate Hackney as poor.  The Government has got to support us through this crisis.

“Today, in the House of Commons, Nick Clegg challenged the Prime Minister to back our plans to help families -  to cut taxes, cut energy bills and stop the unnecessary repossession of homes.  But Gordon Brown wouldn't give a straight answer.  He never does.”

Keith Angus, who works in the banking sector, told us: “Liberal Democrats were the first to recognise that Northern Rock would have to be nationalised.  But the Government dithered for months.

“We were the first to recognise that tax cuts would be needed to help low and middle income people through the 'crunch'.  Conservatives and Labour both rubbished those ideas.  Now the Tories are trying to jump on our wagon - but the Government is still dithering.

“Diane Abbott,  MP for Hackney North,  opens her 'About Hackney' website page with the words: 'Labour is working hard for local communities, delivering more jobs...'  But that's just not happening.  She's out of date.  She's out of touch.

“The Office for National Statistics is telling us today: 'There has been a fall in  both the number of people in employment and the employment rate.  The number of vacancies has fallen.'

“When will Labour catch up with reality and the Liberal Democrats?  Families in Hackney cannot afford to wait.  They're facing a difficult winter.”
